The opportunities and threats posed by disruptive forces and events have the potential to make or break an organization’s ability to create long-term value. These issues need to be front and center on board agendas, but many boards are behind the curve: almost half of directors in an online NACD poll said their board’s tendency to focus on known risks (those that management has already identified) creates a major barrier to the board’s ability to oversee disruptive risks, and less than 20 percent expressed confidence in management’s ability to address risks in this category.

Robyn Bew is NACD’s Director of Strategic Content Development. She focuses on driving innovation in NACD’s thought leadership, including Blue Ribbon Commission reports and other research workstreams. She leads NACD’s Advisory Councils and other multi-stakeholder dialogues on governance topics, and also contributes to NACD educational programming, including serving on the faculty for NACD director education courses. Before joining NACD, Robyn was a principal at Tapestry Networks, where she worked with large-cap public company board members. Earlier in her career, Robyn was a senior director at the Corporate Executive Board and a management consultant at Monitor Group.

Mary Pat McCarthy, CPA, serves on the board of directors at
Micron Technologies and Palo Alto Networks. She most
recently was a board member of Andeavor and Mutual of
Omaha. She is also a retired Vice Chair of KPMG LLP having
served on the Firm’s Management (executive) and Operations
Committees and has served as the Executive Director of the
KPMG Audit Committee Institute. Ms. McCarthy has been the
audit/executive partner to national and international clients
and is an audit committee financial expert. She is the author of
several books on risk, strategy and business transformation and
has been the Co-Chair/Commissioner for a number of NACD
Blue Ribbon Commission Reports. She has also been
recognized by Directorship Magazine as one of the top 100
influential people in corporate governance and the

business administration from Creighton University and is a
